About the Club

The Equestrian Club is open to all students at Virginia Tech, no matter how much or little experience they have with horses. All majors are welcome, you do not need to be an Animal and Poultry Science major or minor to join the club! Members must pay dues and be active in the club activities, earning hours along the way. We hold meetings in Litton-Reaves Hall every-other Tuesday at 8 pm. Our meetings generally give information about our upcoming events, but occasionally we invite speakers from the horse world to come tell us about various aspects of their practices. The club exists mainly to support our three riding teams as they compete, and also to support the campus barn. Without club members, our teams would not be able to be as successful as they are. Club members are invited to join in any activity the team members hold, including traveling to shows and watching practices.

Joining the Club

Joining is easy! Attend the first meeting, held at the beginning of each semester, and pay the dues which are $40 per semester, or $60 per year. Dues must be paid to the treasurer, Anna Burke, by the 2nd meeting of the semester in order to be considered an active member of the club. Attendance at club meetings is necessary for active status in the club. Only two meetings a semester may be missed, with excuses turned in to the secretary, Sonora Jamerson.  If you miss more than two meetings in one semester, a fee of $30 is due to the club or two barn shifts must be worked.

Hours

Members get hours for attending or otherwise contributing to activities planned by the executive committee. If the correct amount of hours are not earned, the member will be suspended from the club, and removed from the riding team, if applicable. It's not hard, and there are plenty of opportunities throughout the semester. Social hours will be awarded for various social activities, such as potlucks, movies or special events. Service hours will be earned by participation in volunteer or community oriented projects or events such as Relay for Life or VT's Big Event. Fundraising points can be earned by many revenue generating tasks, such as donating $15 worth of concession items or selling clothing at shows. Barn hours are given for service to the barn like leveling stalls or cutting burrs. Finally, show hours are earned for participating in two committees for team and club members.  The requirements are listed below.

Team Members: 18 Hours and 2 Fundraising Points

Club Members: 15 Hours and 1 Fundraising Point
